College (un)Preparedness

In the article "College Students 'get away with' poor preparation" it was stated that students are getting away with being unprepared which is being blamed on teachers. Each teacher has a different way of teaching and some are labeled as 'pushovers'. For students having a pushover teacher is awesome. If you ask them to push back the date of a paper or test they are the ones who are most likely to do it. Another reason students are able to get away with unpreparedness is because students make up believable excuses. This doesnt usually happen but with some teachers they make exceptions. Teachers could not allow late work to be turned in and for students they should make use of study hall or the resources we have on campus!

Tierney Cahill- "Living without Fear"

When I heard we had to go to listen to a speaker for class I was not too thrilled. As soon as she started speaking my feelings changed. I was interested in what she was saying and she was a very good speaker. I was able to relate to Tierney Cahill because I want to be a teacher as well. She really cared about her students and you could tell that she had a really good relationship with the students. Her students dared her to try the unthinkable; run for political office. She didnt know much about it but she did some research, and had her students help her out. She didnt win but the experience really changed her life for the better.

I hope that when I become a teacher my students will look up to me. I want to teach first grade because I want to teach kids how to read. I remember my first grade teacher to this day, and because of her I was able to read and continue my education.

I am very scared to ride the Superman Roller Coaster. I have been on many others but for some reason this coaster scares me to death! I think that with the right frame of mind, a hand to hold, and the thought of the bravery of Teirney Cahill, I would be able to ride this roller coaster.

Dead Man Walking

Dead Man Walking was a very touching and controversial play. Sister Prejean, author Dead Man Walking and The Death of Innocence, came to our campus to talk about her experiences. She told us about how she helped people convicted of murder waiting to be killed. Sister Prejean told us about a family of a victim who came up to her and told her that they were upset that she didnt help their broken family. This play was about that family which made it easy to understand because she had talked to us about it. The play was very sad which brought tears to my eyes. It made me want to go read the book and watch the movie.
Lucy did a great job playing Sister Prejean. All the actors and actresses did an amazing job!

Her message really touched me in a very powerful way, since I want to become a teacher her story was very personal and insightful! I can inspire others as I gain more knowledge in college and as I teach children and inspire them to become an influence in society. After listening to Mrs. Cahill's speech I now believe I can attempt many new things such as staying at Lee's McRae since it is so far away from home!
Her speech was very good, and I enjoyed listening to her! :)

The Economy

I think the economic down turn will affect me because it has a negative effect on my parents. It will also affect me when I graduate from college and enter the work field. The aspect that affects me the most at this current time in today's society would be gas prices. With the increase in the price of gas I do not have as many opportunities to visit my house as much, meaning I don't get to see my family as much. This has made things harder for me to deal with adversity because I don't get to see my greatest support group, my FAMILY! No I have not changed my financial behavior because since I am away at school I am focusing on my classes, and playing lacrosse. I do not have enough time to have a job, and I dont have my car at school so I dont worry about money or gas. It makes things alot easier. I feel bad for my parents!

Drinking at Lees McRae College

Drinking is definately a social thing at colleges throughout the United States. When invited to a party students usually feel like they need to go to make friends. If you go you will probably be around drinking whether you choose to do it or not. You may have to deal with peer pressure or just feel like you have to because you think "everyone" is doing it. Students play drinking games which may require one to drink alot.

I am completely against drinking and driving becuase I have seen the negative outcomes when people do. If and/or when you go to a party you should always make sure you have a designated driver! I think our campus should have a program called safe ride because then we would be making an effort to help prevent the tradegies that may occur when someone chooses to drink a drive.

Right now the drinking age is 21 but I think it should be 18. First of all thousands of 18 year olds enter college. They are away from there parents, and are around drinking anyway. I think if they make it legal then maybe less kids would want to drink. Its a rebellious act and some people may just drink because of that. I also think that if you can be 18 and serve your country (risking your life) then I think you should be able to have a few drinks.

Although drinking is illegal it is occuring on college campus's throughout the United States. It is something that everyone should be aware of so that students are able to make the right/smart decisions.

Mountain Day

I think mountain day was alot of fun because not only did we get to miss classes but there were alot of fun activities! I think we should keep mountain day around because the real mountain day consists of community service with your fellow classmates, team mates, and friends! It is a good way to meet new people while doing something productive for your community!

Traditions such as mountain day are important to the school and have shaped much of the morals and beliefs of the school. Some traditions in my life that have had a great influence are my families Christmas Eve celebration because it brings us all together to celebrate a very important religous holiday!

I loved mountain day :)
